The Lifecycle of a Recycled Phone: From Customer to Refurbished Device

The Lifecycle of a Recycled Phone: From Customer to Refurbished Device

Today’s consumer is in a near-constant cycle of updating their mobile devices, which raises the question of how we’re getting rid of our unwanted smartphones and tablets. Our old devices shouldn’t end up in landfills — in fact, most of them have plenty of useful life left in them (or at least useful components). Instead, these devices can find a second life through the processes of recycling and refurbishment.

The circular economy system keeps materials in use for as long as possible, which minimizes the demand for the production of new raw materials. As a convenient, self-service solution, making recycling cell phones as simple as grabbing some cash from the ATM, an ecoATM kiosk is a hub for the circular economy.

Many consumers churn through device after device, never stopping to think about their environmental footprint or the full life cycle of a smartphone. Smartphone usage is at an all-time high, and our phones are arguably the most important device in the entire range of information and communication technologies (ICT). But many of us never stop to think about the environmental impact of the constant upgrade cycle or the energy consumed in the constant churn of smartphone trade-ins.

For business owners, understanding this cycle reveals the value of hosting an ecoATM kiosk at your brick-and-mortar retail location. As an ecoATM host, your business can promote sustainability, attract new foot traffic, and keep customers in your store for longer.

But it all starts with a life cycle assessment: How does a smartphone go from an ecoATM kiosk back into use as a refurbished device?

The Refurbished Lifecycle of a Smartphone

Step 1 – The Original Owner Decides to Recycle Their Device

Every recycled phone’s journey starts with its original owner deciding that it’s time for an upgrade. Maybe they’re switching from the Android operating system to an iPhone, or perhaps they’re upgrading to the newest phone in their favorite flagship device line. Whatever the reason, that original owner is moving on from their current phone, so they bring it to an ecoATM kiosk to exchange it for instant cash.

Our self-service kiosks are conveniently located in safe, secure retail centers, such as Walmart, Dollar General, Kroger, Albertsons, Westfield Properties, Total Wireless, and more. ecoATM simplifies the smartphone recycling process by eliminating common roadblocks (like shipping delays or trade-in program restrictions) and offering financial incentives to encourage consumers to participate.

Step 2 – Cell Phone Evaluation at the ecoATM Kiosk

We evaluate each device when its owner connects it to the kiosk. Our sophisticated technology allows us to automatically assess the phone’s model, specifications, physical condition, functionality, and locked/unlocked status. It only takes a couple of minutes for our automated system to complete this analysis, at which point we provide the seller with an instant cash offer.

If they accept the price we offer, we’ll provide cash or digital payment (via PayPal or Venmo) on the spot and securely deposit the phone into a bin inside the kiosk. For host businesses, this seamless and simple exchange generates foot traffic and extends the length of time customers linger in the store, both of which are revenue drivers. In addition, around 70% of the cash dispensed by our kiosks is spent in the stores they’re located in! Talk about easy money.

Step 3 – Transporting and Sorting Used Cell Phones

After we collect the devices from our kiosks, we transport them to our ecoATM processing facility in Louisville, Kentucky. There, our team members make sure that all personal data has been wiped from every phone and that they’re restored to their original factory settings. We also verify that none of the devices are stolen or activation locked.

From there, it’s all about performing a life cycle assessment and determining whether the phone has reached the end of its expected lifetime. If we think it still has some life left in it, we’ll move it forward into the next step, “Repair and Refurbishment.” If not, we’ll skip forward to the “Responsible Recycling” portion of Step 5.

Step 4 – Repair and Refurbishment

At our processing center, we analyze and sort smartphones based on their manufacturer, model, storage capacity, and physical and functional condition. The phones we select for refurbishment undergo a thorough repair process, followed by rigorous testing to make sure each device works like new.

Our highly trained, expert technicians perform the following processes on each device, as necessary:

  • Replacing damaged screens, rechargeable batteries, buttons, speakers, microphones, brackets, etc.
  • Conducting extensive diagnostic tests to verify device functionality.
  • Sanitizing and cleaning devices before resale.
  • Performing software updates and a final data wipe.

Once these processes are complete, we sell these refurbished devices through a variety of channels, including our sister company, Gazelle — a direct-to-consumer refurbished electronics retailer. Overall, our goal is to extend the useful life of as many smartphones and other electronic devices as possible, keeping them out of landfills and cutting back on the demand for new electronics.

Step 5 – A Return to Market or Responsible Recycling

Refurbished Smartphones: Reselling Pre-Owned Devices to New Users

Even though Apple and Samsung release new versions of their flagship smartphones every year, these manufacturers only make big changes to these new models every two or three years. With this in mind, refurbished phones have become increasingly popular, as they offer similar functionality to a new device at a fraction of the cost — and without the environmental harm of new-phone production processes.

The growing demand for refurbished tech fuels our business model, and it’s also what drives increased foot traffic at retail centers that host ecoATM kiosks. By facilitating the exchange of old cell phones for instant cash, your business can play a vital role in the e-waste ecosystem. You’ll be helping us reduce the carbon footprint of precious-metal mining and refining processes for new smartphones with near-zero operational burden.

End-of-Life Device Recycling: Reducing the Environmental Impact of Lithium-Ion Batteries and Other Fossil-Fuel Materials

Unfortunately, we can’t refurbish every device we accept at our kiosks, no matter how talented our technicians are (and they are very talented!). The cell phones that have reached the end of their life cycles will be recycled to…

  • Extract precious metals and components (i.e., Li-ion batteries, circuit boards, and other materials)
  • Dispose of hazardous materials safely and with minimal carbon emissions
  • Follow strict environmental recycling standards

Even when we receive a non-functional device, we reuse its individual components in a way that reduces demand for new raw materials and minimizes the release of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

Why Does a Smartphone’s Life Cycle Assessment Matter to Your Business?

For retail business owners and operators, understanding the full life cycle of a refurbished cell phone helps illustrate the strategic value of hosting an ecoATM kiosk in your store. Here are three ways an ecoATM kiosk can deliver serious value for your business:

1. Driving Foot Traffic

ecoATM attracts new potential customers to your business location, and these people are both tech-savvy and eco-conscious. They could become consistent customers at your national retailer, discount store, grocery chain, convenience store, money center, mall, wireless store, or other brick-and-mortar business. The average payout at an ecoATM kiosk is $50, and 70% of that money gets spent in the store where the kiosk is located. In other words, these people have money to spend, and you have a place to spend it!

2. Reducing Your Environmental Footprint

Sustainability is a major priority for today’s consumer, who values a good bargain as much as they value minimizing the effects of climate change. When they see an ecoATM kiosk in your lobby, they see you as being intentional about your environmental impact and carbon footprint. Your involvement in valuable recycling programs can help you build brand trust within your customer base.

3. Generating Passive Income

In addition to all of these other benefits, we also pay you to host our kiosks. You’ll be generating passive income even if no one ever uses the kiosk — which they will, of course. We’ve already helped recycle or refurbish over 50 million smartphones and tablets over the years, and consumers interact with our kiosks 40,000+ times every day. That’s a lot of potential foot traffic for your store!

Host an ecoATM and Help Extend the Average Lifespan of a Smartphone

The average life cycle of a cell phone is less than three years (low-end models get replaced as quickly as every 18 months, mid-range phones last 2-3 years, high-end devices can last five years or more). It’s scary to think about the environmental impact of such a frequent replacement cycle. After all, it’s not just the cell phones themselves that require significant amounts of valuable raw materials — our accessories like cords, chargers, cases, screen protectors, and earbuds also have an environmental impact.

If you want to help ecoATM lengthen a smartphone’s average useful lifetime while also driving foot traffic to your business, consider hosting one of our kiosks. Keep in mind that we handle all of the following elements, leaving you with nearly zero responsibilities:

  • Site surveys and permitting
  • Delivery and installation
  • Ongoing maintenance, customer support, and security updates
  • Marketing efforts, digital signage, kiosk lighting, etc.

If you own a mall, money center, wireless store, national retailer, discount store, grocery chain, convenience store, or other high-volume, broad-demographic brick-and-mortar business, get in touch with us today to discuss a site evaluation.

Hosting an ecoATM drives new customers to your location, increases the amount of time they spend in your store, and puts cash in their pockets, all while reinforcing your brand’s eco-friendly values in a public-facing manner.
